POEM

A PUPPY'S PRAYER

Now, I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep...
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"

I sneak up slowly to begin
My nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth
I'm a puppy, don't you see?
For the morning's here
and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way...

So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares her bed with me at night!

A DOG'S LOVE

A dog's love
seems to have no end
When humans want to hate
a dog, simply wants to mend

A dog's love
is expressed each time
Where as humans seem
to leave their feelings behind

A dog's love
is always the same
When humans love
some play a game

A dog's love
we may never understand
For they love completely
that seems lost in man

A dog's love
can only be known
By one who loved a dog
and dog moments they own

Dog moments are special
only way I can explain
They are when a dog affects
both your heart and your brain

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Remember that before you buy me.

Give me time to understand what you want of me. Don't be impatient, short-tempered, or irritable.

Place your trust in me and I will always trust you back. Respect is earned not given as an inalienable right.

Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment; I am not capable of understanding why. I only know I have been rejected. You have your work, entertainment, and friends, but I only have you.

Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice and your tone. You only have to look at my tail.

Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it and if it's cruel, it may affect me forever.

Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you,
and yet, I choose not to bite you.

Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak. It may be I am just dog-tired.

Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old and may also need love, care, comfort, and...

On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say, "I can't bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, regardless of what you do, I will always love you.
